The specification of veneer species for the construction of curved plywood should be based on the following requirements and factors:

  1. Finished part strength
  2. Dimensional Stability
  3. Appearance
  4. Cost
  5. Long-term Availability
  6. Lead Times

Specifying the use of wood species that are renewable resources is a requirement at Davidson Plyforms. In addition to protecting endangered species, this ensures the uninterrupted supply of material for use in the life cycle of a given product. Most species of veneer can be used to manufacture curved plywood, but the cost, appearance, and strength vary greatly.

To specify veneer for a curved plywood component, first consider whether the part will be exposed or hidden by upholstery or other covering. If the part is exposed, what types of appearance is desired for the product? Does the designer have a specific grain pattern or color in mind? Can this appearance be achieved using more than a single choice of veneer? If the part is going to be upholstered, then consider what your needs are for strength performance, color and price.
